Cubovision – Telecom Italia
Cubovision was the original brand name for an Italian internet video-on-demand service and hybrid set-top box launched by Telecom Italia (now TIM Group) in 2010 using internal hardware from Amino Communications. The service was rebranded as TIMvision in 2014, which is the current name of the platform.
Cubovision was primarily a physical, cube-shaped device that combined traditional digital terrestrial television with broadband internet access. It allowed users to access standard Italian DTT channels, including premium ones. It offered a portal with an on-demand catalogue of content, including movies, TV series (from partners like CBS and ABC Studios), documentaries, cartoons, and concerts. Users could rent or purchase titles. The box provided access to “WebTV” content, news widgets, and allowed users to manage their own personal media like photos, videos, and music, thanks to a built-in hard disk drive on some models.
In addition to the set-top box, Cubovision content was accessible via web browsers, Samsung Smart TVs, and mobile applications for tablets and smartphones.
JWD supported Amino with the design and manufacture of the Cubovision set-top box, the aesthetic of presented a unique challenge. The EMC requirements specified an internal metal cabinet that was enclosed using injection-moulded part assembly that could be easily and quickly assembled with no fasteners visible on the outer surfaces.
